Google spruces Android Market app, adds Movies and Books tabs

Android 2.2 and above user? Strap in and get ready to have an updated Android Market experience. Google have a new version of the Android Market coming, a version that adds tabs for easy access to Google Books and Movies. From $1.99, you'll be able to start watching movies virtually instantly, offline access is also available which will allow users to download the movies to their devices for later viewing.

Books is now integrated also, saving the hassle of having to launch the app, which required one to open the browser to actually buy any digital books. The new design is also cleaner, finger-friendlier (Engadgets wording!! haha) and the addition of Editor's Choice apps should make your experience easier than ever. The update is rolling out over the next few weeks.

Samsung Galaxy S II has over 3 million units sold in just 55 days

Samsung have announced (and most likely, very proudly) that they have passed the 3 million units sold milestone of their latest and greatest (and may I add, amazing) Samsung Galaxy S II Android-powered smartphone. The Galaxy S II is expected to launch in no less than 120 countries on over 140 mobile operators, so these numbers will expand pretty quickly. Keep in mind that the phone has only launched in South Korea and the UK, these numbers are mighty impressive for just two markets.

The phone launches in the US later this month. Samsung has modest ambitions for the Galaxy S II; sell 10 million units for the entire of 2011. If they've hit 3 million, in just two countries in less than two months, then I dare say Samsung have got their goals sealed up, ready to go and the Moet is on the chill.

RumorTT: Apple iPhone 5 to be announced and released in August

Apple's usual announce and release dates for iPhones have always been this time of the year, but Apple have missed the mark this year and are now rumored to be announcing and releasing the next-generation iPhone 5 in August. Apple has been rumored to be giving some developers access to a device known as the iPhone 4S, an iPhone 4 with upgraded internals. This is not the iPhone 5, which is rumored to include anything from an 8-megapixel camera by Sony to a larger, but thinner bezel.

According to BGR, the iPhone 5 will have a radical new case design. Many people are expecting Apple to announce the new iPhone at their annual September event which is usually iPod-focused. Apple may break tradition and hold an even in the middle of August for the announcement of the next-generation iPhone.

Nokia N9, 3.9-inches of MeeGo goodness

Nokia have unveiled their MeeGo device, the Nokia N9. It features a 3.9-inch AMOLED screen rocking a 854x480 resolution, includes no keyboard or physical buttons of any kind (apart from the volume rocker and camera button). Comes in 16GB and 64GB on-board memory options, 1GB of RAM and is hugged by a polycarbonate shell that is colored all the way through which means scratches and dents shouldn't show unless it's a deep scratch of course.

Connectivity wise the N9 packs quad-band GSM as well as penta-band WCDMA, Bluetooth 2.1, NFC and GPS. The N9 also includes a dedicated camera button for the 8-megapixel wide-angle shooter which is capable of aperture F2.2 for low light shots and true 16:9 720p video recording.

Nokia's N9 measures 116.45x 61.2 x 7.6-12.11mm and weighs 136 grams. It also packs a battery capable of lasting up to 50 hours of music, 4.5 hours of 720p video and between seven and 11 hours of voice calls. It also includes turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance in Maps, a dedicated Drive app, proximity sensor and a choice of hue: black, cyan and magenta.

 

Filling the device out is 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, an ambient light sensor, compass, orientation sensor, a micro SIM slot, tethering support and a 3.5mm "AV connector". It'll be running MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan with apps being compliant with Qt 4.7 and HTML5 support is included.

Software is not limited at all, the N9 boasts Angry Birds Magic, Galaxy on Fire 2, Real Golf 2011 and OpenGL ES 2.0. Pinch-to-zoom support is included as are unified notifications for Facebook, Twitter and RSS feeds in the Events view as well as social networking profiles and status updates merged into phone contacts. MeeGo is powered by a user interface which is simplified into three home views - events, applications and open apps. A simple swipe gesture is able to take you back to the home view.

PhotoFast Releases i-FlashDrive (UltraDock and GDock Power)

PhotoFast Global Inc. have released three new Apple products today. First up they have introduced the i-FlashDrive which is a two-way storage device between iOS-based devices and Mac/PC. The device doesn't require your iOS-based device to be jailbroken, the i-FlashDrive is a two-way file transfer accessory for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The product is Apple-approved and allows users to copy files from desktop to iOS devices and vica versa.

This allows greater flexibility in the form of backups, allowing receiving and backup of files for business trips, copy documents in class or even on an airplane. All it requires is to be plugged in, then disconnected - simple! It also includes built-in contact backup, importing photos from camera roll which allows users to keep a copy off-device. It also features the iCloud API which will be included in later updates of the device. MSRP pricing for 8, 16 and 32GB is USD$95, $115 and $185 respectively.

 

The i-FlashDrive also works as a normal Flash Drive and is compatible with all OSs, including Mac, Windows and Linux. It ships early next month.

 

The second release from PhotoFast is the UltraDock. This is for people with multiple Apple devices and is built as a solution for your living room, office and any other room where you might place your Apple products. When not using your iOS-based device, dock it and let it charge. Got another iOS-based device? Dock it too, the UltraDock can charge and sync three devices at the same time!

The UltraDock has an MSRP of USD$70 and ships early next month.

 

Finally, we have the GDock power. The GDock power is a portable battery dock with a nice, universal dock design which allows you to put an iPhone or iPod on it without taking off its cover and casing. Take the GDock power with you and it allows you twice the power. While it's charging your device it will also sync it with your Mac or PC.

The GDock power has an MSRP of USD$60 and ships early next month also.

Google unveils Wallet

Google's Wallet has finally been unveiled, with Google saying "Your phone will be your wallet". This is what Google Wallet and Google offers will be capable of, by combining payments and deals into one package. It's the future of paying for things, really. Google Wallet is not a single thing, it's a cake mix of multiple products rolled into a single thing. It's an Android app, it's a way of paying for things with credit or debit cards by using your phone.

It's a coupon collector and loyalty card system, it's another way for merchants to let you pay and offer up deals. It has tentacles into other Google services such as Shopper and Google Offers. The core technology uses wireless NFC and more specifically, MasterCards's PayPass system, so you'll be able to use it anywhere that offers PayPass.

At the moment, Citi's the sole banking partner with Sprint as the carrier partner. At the moment, you're limited to a single phone and credit card for the full Google Wallet experience. Only a Nexus S 4G and Citi MasterCard will give you the "full" experience, although you can fill up the Google pre-paid card that comes with every wallet using any credit or debit card. Google are saying that GoogleWallet is "more secure than your wallet", well I don't know about that, my wallet gets my ass-time than my chair.

      

The reasoning behind this is that Wallet never displays your full credit card details, it requires a PIN to access and the data is encrypted. If you lose it, the cards can be de-provisioned over-the-air which is quite the feature. There's a fair amount of security built into the phone's NFC chip (which stores and transmits the credit card info). Such as, the NFC antenna is turned off when the screen is off - this means it's completely secure in your pocket again "laser-attacks" (pew pew).

Minecraft Goes Mobile, FTW x Infinity

Indie-game sensation Minecraft will hit both Android and iOS later this year, and will be unveiled at this summer's E3. Evidently the game will only be available on Sony's new Xperia Play handheld, but will be gradually introduced into the rest of the mobile ecosystem.

No concrete knowledge right now for the actual release date, but I'm sure we'll hear all about it following that gigantic game conference in Los Angeles this year.

Samsung unveil 10.1-inch, 2560x1600 capable display

The inner-geek (well, ok, it's not so much inner, more everyday-geek) really loved seeing this news, Samsung have unveiled a high-resolution, 10.1-inch display that supports a maximum resolution of 2560x1600 that should power next-gen tablets including the next-gen iPad and Android-powered devices.

Samsung's new display is just a tech demo at the moment as it is not ready for mass production. What it does demonstrate is that high-resolution, high-pixel density tablet displays are possible without crazy power requirements that would normally be included. Samsung could also opt to use this new display tech in their own devices (Galaxy Tab Ultra-HD 10.1 maybe? - Contact me Samsung if you like that name). Considering all the lawsuits Apple were flinging at Samsung, if I were Samsung I wouldn't be giving out this tech in a hurry.

But, on the flip side Apple would most likely want 50 million of these screens, making Samsung a nice pile of Dineros. This new display is set to be shown off at the SID Display Week 2011 trade show next week in LA.

No iPhone 5 This Summer, Expect iPhone 4S

Eric Savitz of Forbes reported today on a research note penned by analyst Peter Misek of Jeffries & Co:

"According to our industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support."

I just want to say it right now: TOLD YOU SO.

Misek went to write that information indicated Apple would nevertheless be announcing Sprint, T-Mobile, and China Mobile as new carriers. The iPhone 4S will not, I repeat not, have an LTE chip. HSPA+ isn't bad, but it would be nice to get real 4G. Also would be nice to, you know, not have to buy a new phone every 6 months. Can't Apple take a page from Chromebook and release some tech that only gets better with time?

RIM Announces Two Brand New Smartphones: BlackBerry Bold 9900 & 9930, Now With New OS

RIM are still holding onto the smartphone market and have shown this by debuting a couple of new smartphones that RIM are claiming to be the thinnest and most powerful Blackberry devices yet. The new smartphones are also powered by the new Blackberry 7 OS, the two models? Blackberry Bold 9900 and 9930.

Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO of Research in Motion has said:

" The new BlackBerry Bold smartphones and BlackBerry 7 OS are inspired by millions of customers around the world who want the ultimate combination of performance, functionality and style. These fully-loaded and beautifully crafted smartphones offer a highly refined user experience with blazingly fast performance, a brilliant touch screen and an outstanding typing experience. "

RIM are stating that the new phones are only 10.5mm-thick and that the materials used on the new smartphones are optimized for quality and durability. Both new Blackberry devices include 1.2GHz processors, use new Liquid Graphics Touch screens, support 4G HSPA+ mobile networks and also NFC technology.

The new Liquid Graphics touchscreen is a key feature of the devices and is powered by Blackberry OS 7, the screen offers responsive touch navigation and is up to scratch with mobile gaming also. RIM is claiming the screen is good for up to 60 frames per second performance for video and also gaming. The screen has a DPI of 287.

The 9900 and 9930 are pretty much identically specced - a 2.8-inch screen with a 640x480 resolution, a QWERTY keyboard (what!) and an optical track pad. They also feature 8GB of on-board storage, a microSD card slot with support for up to 32GB cards and a 5-megapixel rear camera that is capable of recording 720p video. Finally, we have 802.11a/n Wi-Fi and of course, Bluetooth.

The biggest news is probably the new Blackberry 7 OS, the new OS has improved browsing online, voice-activated searches and the ability to manage a user's personal content separately from their business content. The new browser in the OS supports HTML5 video and other elements.

Apple prepping Sandy Bridge-powered iMac and MacBook Air

For anyone in the market for a new iMac or MacBook Air, please wait. Apple are looking to release Sandy Bridge-powered iMac and MacBook Air's with Apple stopping the flow of stock to resellers this week.

On the MacBook Air side of things, it looks like the 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models won't enter mass production until late May with a launch sometime in June. This wait is worth it, the Sandy Bridge-powered MacBook Pro's are bloody awesome.

Everyone that's excited about a white iPhone 4 can finally have it! Everyone in Belgium, that is. A Belgian website, Webstore.be, put the following listing up on their site with a listing for "Apple Iphone 4 16GB Wit":

I know it's a novelty and all, but who really wants a white iPhone 4? You're just going to cover it with a case anyway- and if you don't your white iPhone 4 is soon going to "mottled smudgy charcoalish" iPhone 4.

Dual SIM Dual Core Motorola XT882 Smartphone Hands-On

Motorola XT882 has two of everything! This four inch smartphone has an NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz dual-core processor, access to UMTS and EVDO networks with its Dual SIM, I mean the powerhouse even has a dual LED flash!

The stand out feature besides the NVIDIA processor is the dual SIM card slots which are targeted at different networks so you'll be able to have one SIM running on the UMTS network and the EVDO network, basically GSM & CDMA. In addition to this feature that is taylored at the Chinese market, the other physical design change that's region specific is the ports are covered to streamline the phone. The other thing is that CDMA phones here have SIM cards, this was the first time I'd seen this ability live in a hand set.

This four inch smartphone is running Android 2.3 or Gingerbread on its HD display, no other detailed specs were given as Motorola is pushing the concept of the phone rather then the specs at the moment. Apple slap Samsung with a lawsuit, claim they've copied the iPhone and iPad

Apple is not happy with Samsung, they've filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung (who have just sold their HDD operations to Seagate btw!) for the Galaxy-branded line of products. Apple is claiming that Samsung have infringed on their rights with the Galaxy S phones and Tab by violating various patents which were assigned to Apple by US PTO.

Apple also think that the Galaxy S phones and Galaxy Tab look like their iPhone and iPad, which is a violation called "trade dress". Apart from sounding like Apple are saying Samsung are cross-dressing, Apple are seriously pissed about this and are claiming that the Galaxy Tab took its design from the iPad with the same aspect ratio, rectangular shape, rounded corners (oh no!) and similar black border - referencing the similarities found in the iPad.

A representative from Apple said to Mobilized:

It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging.. Verizon Wireless and HTC have officially announced their upcoming 4G Android smartphone ‘HTC Thunderbolt’ at this year’s CES. This new LTE-capable handset will sport a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen display,
